Our Process And Philosophy

Each cutting board is made from a single, hand selected piece of domestic hardwood lumber that was grown, harvested and milled in the United States. After being cut to size and shaped, the boards go through a multi step sanding process to produce the beautiful and all natural finished board. No glues, adhesives or other chemicals are used. No oils, waxes or other finishes are applied. Using a very fine grit sandpaper, the goal is to hand polish each board to a near glass like finish.

Over time with daily use, your cutting board will show a patina of cuts and stains. This is normal and desirable. Quality cutting boards, as with many well cared for authentic objects improve over time as they develop character. The Japanese call it Wabi-Sabi. Wabi - recognizing beauty in humble simplicity. Sabi - is concerned with the passage of time, the way all things grow, age, and decay, and how it manifests itself beautifully in objects. Thus, wabi-sabi can be understood to mean seeing the beauty in imperfection. Things become more beautiful as they age and acquire the marks, stains and scars of use. Everything is impermanent and imperfect. This should be valued and appreciated. Cheap, mass produced objects are intended to be identical to one another, appeal to everyone, and ultimately be disposable.  Think of the way that a cast iron skillet develops over time versus how a cheap, Teflon coated frying pan ages.

Our boards won’t be for everyone, but they may be for you.
